What is a PHP?

A Mid-Level Step in the Continuum of Care

A partial hospitalization program is a high-support option for mental health and addiction treatment that doesn’t require overnight stays. The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) organizes care into levels 0.5 through 4 — PHP sits at Level 2 alongside intensive outpatient programming, giving clients structure and clinical depth while they continue to live at home.

At Wavecrest’s PHP in Orange County, clients engage in individual and group counseling, trauma-informed therapies, and wellness-focused activities such as yoga, art therapy, and meditation — a supportive environment for healing with evenings back at home.

PHP vs. IOP

How PHP Compares to an Intensive Outpatient Program

Both PHP and IOP deliver structured recovery support. They differ in intensity and time commitment.

Partial Hospitalization Program

  • Full-day care, typically 5 days per week
  • 6+ clinical hours daily
  • Full schedule of therapy sessions and psychiatric support
  • Return home each evening — no overnight stay required

Intensive Outpatient Program

  • 3 days per week, approximately 3 hours per day
  • Group therapy, family therapy, and evidence-based modalities
  • Preserves work, school, and family commitments
  • Effective step-down after PHP or first-line care for many
Who should consider PHP?

Signs PHP May Be the Right Fit

PHP sits between inpatient treatment and standard outpatient care — intensive daytime support without 24/7 supervision. Some begin PHP after inpatient or detox, others enter directly when stable at home.

Detox complete or unnecessary

You've already completed medically supervised detox, or physical dependence doesn't require it.

Safe without 24-hour monitoring

You're clinically stable enough to spend evenings and nights outside a residential setting.

Supportive home environment

The place you return to at night is safe, sober, and supportive of your recovery.

Reliable transportation

You can get to and from the program each treatment day. If home isn't the right setting, sober living may be a better fit.

If symptoms are disrupting your daily life but don’t require inpatient care, PHP offers multiple full treatment days of therapy and support with personalized treatment plans, individual therapy, and group sessions.
